MemoQ Server and Server Add-ins

One Team One Tool.

The MemoQ server publishes translation memories and term bases over the internet. There is no restriction on the number of users connecting concurrently: any number of translators can connect with a Translator Pro license, a mobile LSP5 client license or a postcardware license. The server operates as a Windows service in the background. It does not require a powerful computer nor a very fast internet connection. To operate the server you also need to have a MemoQ client installed on the same computer.

You can create users on the server, assign them to groups, and give your users or groups privileges to access translation memories and term bases. One of the unique features of the MemoQ server is the MemoQ server project. The server project is a project template that is used to set up projects for the translators and project managers. You can assign documents to users and you can set up the translation memory and term base connections. Translators only have to log in to the server with their user name and password, and they can see a list of translation jobs assigned to them: double-clicking the name of a job will download and set up their translation project.

You can also enhance the server workflow with the server add-ins.

The Communication add-in enables users in the server project to communicate with each other through the use of MemoQ’s built-in instant messaging and forum functionality. The forum is yet another translation resource, it is equivalent to a knowledge base that stores all the discussions related to a project, a client or a particular job. The content of knowledge bases is available to translators that join the project later: it is thus yet another resource that enhances consistency.

The Offline Resources add-in is a bridge between online and offline translation memories and term bases. Using this add-in, translators who travel a lot or do not have permanent access to the internet can also use online resources. If you allow them to do so, they can create an offline copy of a server-based translation memory and/or term base on their local computer, and later synchronize only the changes. At synchronization, entries that they added since they last synchronized are copied into the central database and entries added by others are downloaded into their local copy.

The Moderated Term Bases add-in facilitates sophisticated terminology management and enables your clients to review terminology. When terminology is important, you need someone to review the terms that translators add. Using a moderated term base, new entries are not automatically visible to other translators: before they appear in public, they need to be approved by a terminologist. Terminologists – who can also be senior translators– get a list of the newly added terms, and they can decide to approve or reject term candidates.

The Online document storage add-in makes it possible to store documents in a server project online. Normally documents are downloaded to the translator’s local computer, but when you choose to use online documents, the translator works on a document that is stored on the server itself. This way the project manager can always track progress, and can also change the translators or proofreaders on the fly if needed. With Online document storage it is also possible to perform translation and proofreading on the document simultaneously. Furthermore, the Online document storage add-in enables the integration of documents with external systems such as a content or document management system through the MemoQ server API.
